Amid Ash and Precautions, Catania Adapts to the Unstoppable Power of the Volcano

On Thursday afternoon, Etna created an impressive natural spectacle, with an ash plume over 4 kilometers high rising from the Voragine crater. This event caused a rain of ash on the southeastern slope of the volcano, covering the city of Catania and the surrounding towns. The ash, accumulating like a mantle on streets and sidewalks, made circulation dangerous, prompting Mayor Enrico Trantino to issue an ordinance to limit traffic and ban the circulation of bicycles and motorcycles for 48 hours.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Etna Observatory, observed that the activity of the Voragine crater evolved into a spectacular lava fountain, with a column reaching 4,500 meters in height. After a peak of volcanic tremor, the activity remained high, with infrasonic events localized at the Voragine crater.

Due to the ashfall, Catania Airport closed airspace sectors B2 and B3, suspending all flight operations until the ash is completely removed. The airport management company estimated that activities could resume by 3 PM, but advised passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.

Meanwhile, Stromboli has become active, with lava streams flowing towards the sea and a red alert already in place on the island. Authorities are monitoring the situation, urging the population to follow civil protection instructions. The mayor of Lipari, Riccardo Gullo, announced measures to limit the influx of daily tourists and reduce risks.

Etna, with its relentless and unpredictable activity, continues to remind us of its majestic presence, offering breathtaking natural spectacles while imposing necessary precautions to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
