To the edge of the crater. Where few people actually make it.

There’s a difference between looking at Etna from a distance and standing on top of it. Between photographing it from the valley floor and walking to the rim of the Central Crater at 3300 metres, with the void opening in front of you and the wind carrying the smell of sulphur. This tour is for people who want the second option.

Etna’s summit is not a tourist destination like any other. At 3300 metres the landscape stops being scenic and becomes something harder to describe — mineral, absolute, alive in a way that unsettles as much as it fascinates. Black scoria, volcanic bombs scattered along the trail, the crater profiles reshaped by every eruption: up here geology isn’t something you study, it’s what you walk on.

The tour starts at Piano Provenzana. We drive up in 4×4 vehicles to 2930 metres, where the road ends and the trekking begins. From that point it’s 2 kilometres uphill on foot, 370 metres of elevation gain, a trail through volcanic debris that leads directly to the rim of the Central Crater.

This is a Grade E — Hiking route: a well-marked trail, but at high altitude, with thin air and uneven volcanic terrain. It’s designed for people who walk regularly and have a solid base level of fitness. Navigation isn’t something you need to worry about — a certified alpine guide will be with you for every step of the route, and knows this trail in every condition.

Excursions may be subject to changes or interrupted due to weather or volcanological reasons. In the event of sudden ordinances in the months of July/August 2026, the maximum altitude that can be reached is 2500 m or 3000 m, depending on the prefecture’s ordinances or at the discretion of the guide and the organization.

Proper hiking boots with a rigid sole are not optional ((which we will provide you with): it’s not a matter of comfort, it’s a matter of safety — and without adequate footwear you are not covered by insurance.

When you reach the top, the view makes every step worth it. With a clear sky you can see the whole of Sicily, the sea on both sides, and below you the highest volcano in Europe smoking in silence. We stop on the rim long enough to truly take in where we are.

The return is by 4×4, back down to Piano Provenzana.

A few things to know before you go: the path along the crater rim can cause dizziness in people prone to it. The tour runs with a minimum of 2 participants. If weather conditions are unfavourable, we’ll contact you as early as possible. If you have any health conditions, let your guide know before departure. The excursion runs in compliance with current regulations.
